East Regional tennis: Hanover’s Waren defeats Hoggard’s Horton

4A East Regional at Althea Gibson Tennis Complex

With a trip to next week’s North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 4A Tennis Championships already secured following their performances over the weekend, four singles players and four doubles teams competed for top spot in the East Regional on Monday at the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex in Wilmington.

It was an all New Hanover County affair in the regional final as Marshal Waren (New Hanover) defeated Chase Horton (Hoggard) 6-4, 6-1 to claim individual honors.

New Hanover teammates Patrick Senior and Taylor Gaines made it a clean sweep for the Wildcats with a straight set victory 6-1, 6-2 in the doubles final.

Waren defeated Jaxon Wiley (6-1, 6-3), and Horton surrendered just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win to move onto the final match.

Based on qualifying requirements, all semifinalists who played Monday will head to the NCHSAA tournament scheduled for May 8-9 at Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh.

Singles

Semifinals: Marshal Waren (New Hanover) def. Jaxon Wiley (D.H. Conley) 6-1, 6-3; Chase Horton (Hoggard) def. Colt Auman (Richmond) 6-0, 6-1.

Finals: Waren def. Horton 6-4, 6-1.
Consolation Finals: Auman def. Wiley 6-1, 6-3.

Doubles
Semifinals: Patrick Senior/Taylor Gaines (New Hanover) def.  Rook Meachum/Nick Kuzma (Pinecrest) 6-1, 6-4; Lucas McLatchy/Jack Cooper (New Hanover) def. James Reed/Luke Johnson (Rose) walkover.

Finals: Senior/Gaines def. McLatchy/Cooper 6-1, 6-2.
Consolation Finals: Meachum/Kuzma def. Reed/Johnson walkover.
