Myrtise Hickman McDowell, of Wilmington, died Saturday, May 2, 2015, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She was 81.

Myrtise was born Dec. 17, 1933, in Bolivia, daughter of the late Joseph Bryson Hickman and Ruth Alma Lesh Hickman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenwood E. McDowell; sister, Lila “Tiny” Hickman; brother, George Hickman; and son-in-law, Jeff Marco.

Music was her life. At a young age, she started playing the piano at church and through the years taught piano to over 150 students. She and her family operated McDowell Music and Bible Book and Gift Center in Wilmington for 30 years. Myrtise was a member of Winter Park Baptist Church for over 50 years.

She is survived by her children, Landis McDowell and wife, Lynn, of Wilmington and Lila Marco and Allen McDowell, both of Cary; grandchildren, Kelly Stanley, Michael McDowell (Amber), Aaron Marco, Brian Marco and Christopher Marco (Liz); great-grandchildren, Madison, Nicholas, Zachary, Sophia and Lucas; and brothers and sisters, L.B. “Bud” Hickman, William Hickman, Julia Cordes, Delores Garland, Thomas Hickman, Ruth Harrison and Jacob Hickman.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2015, at Winter Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Teachey officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church’s fellowship hall. Interment will follow the service at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
