New Hanover plated two runs in the top of the seventh to upend Topsail 6-5 in Hampstead on Saturday afternoon.

With the Pirates in front by one, Cory Everett hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game and Lambert Long scored on a wild pitch later in the frame for the game-winner.

Trey Croom got the start and tossed 5.1 innings for the Wildcats, while Caleb Bishop recorded the final five outs to record the victory.

New Hanover took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second before Topsail evened things up in the fourth.

With the game tied in the top of the fifth, Max Johnson singled home Ward Coleman to take the lead and Garrett Walston knocked an RBI base hit to bring in Croom as part of a three-run inning.

Clark Cota narrowed the gap with a home run to left and Sam Luchansky gave the Pirates a 5-4 advantage on a bases clearing triple in the bottom of the sixth.

Topsail saw its 16-game winning streak come to an end, but still secured the Mideastern Conference regular season championship with a 10-2 record in league play, 21-2 overall.

New Hanover improved to 7-5 in league play and 15-7 overall.

Both teams return to the diamond next week for the conference tournament.

New Hanover will have one individual and a pair of tandems competing in the semi-finals of the 4A East Regional following victories at the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex in Wilmington on Saturday afternoon.

Marshall Waren (New Hanover) cruised to Monday’s final four in regions as one of the top individual players in the Mideastern Conference. Patrick Senior and Taylor Gaines will also compete for the Wildcats on Monday, along with Lucas McClatchy and Jack Cooper.

Senior Chase Horton will represent Hoggard in the semi-finals of singles play after capturing a 6-1, 6-4 win in the first round, followed by a straight set 6-0, 6-0 triumph in round two.
