Zach Shields smacked a home run and finished with three hits to help guide UNCW in a 12-2 rout over Delaware on Sunday to complete a series sweep at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks pitching staff scattered just five hits and allowed no earned runs. Jordan Ramsey (6-1) picked up the win in relief, striking out two in 1.2 innings of work. Ramsey was one of five pitchers used on the afternoon.
Shields put UNCW on the board in the bottom of the first when he belted an 0-2 offering for a two-run shot as Steven Linkous scored on the round tripper after drawing a leadoff walk. The Seahawks added three in the third to put the game out of reach.
UNCW combined for six extra base hits as Corey Dick homered, while Casey Golden, Gavin Stupienski and Luke Dunlap and Robbie Thorburn all doubled. Shields, Stupienski and Dick also knocked in two runs and Golden scored three runs.
The Seahawks have now won four straight and improved their record to 33-12 overall and 15-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. UNCW stayed perfect in league play at home with the sweep, moving to 9-0. Delaware dropped its fifth consecutive outing and dropped to 18-20 and 7-11.
The Seahawks return to action on May 8 to start a three-game series against conference-leading College of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
