Police investigate gunfire on Orange Street; shelter in place lifted at nearby schools

Wilmington police are investigating reports of gunfire on Orange Street this morning that put several downtown area schools under an order to shelter in place.

Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 1200 block of Orange Street at 9:57 a.m., according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay.

“It does not appear that there was a victim,” Lindsay said.

Students at Gregory School of Science, Mathematics and Technology, Williston Middle School and New Hanover High School were put under a shelter in place order at 10:23 a.m., according to a spokeswoman with New Hanover County Schools. The order was lifted within 15 minutes.
