The local community-owned natural foods store will host a public forum at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at its current location, 5329 Oleander Drive, ahead of its monthly Howl at the Moon party and outdoor movie night.
Last month, the co-op announced its potential move, made as part of an effort to escape increased competition from neighboring chain stores, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, which both carry organic and alternative fare, and parking issues at its Oleander location.
“Other reasons for Tidal Creek considering a downtown Wilmington location include the opportunity to help service a USDA [U.S. Department of Agriculture] food desert, the relative affordability of store space and the fact many co-op owners are already local to greater downtown,” according to a release from the business.
Tidal Creek is currently reviewing several downtown sites and conducting a market study, which includes the current Oleander Drive location, to asses the viability of each.
The co-op has not set a timeline for the move, nor has is decided what will become of the current site should a suitable location be found downtown.
The community forum, organizers say, is simply the next step in that decision process.
