A gas leak in a new development off Carolina Beach Road halted traffic in the area on Tuesday afternoon.

According to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer, sheriff’s deputies and New Hanover County Fire Rescue crews responded to a gas leak at 4:30 p.m. in the Adams Landing neighborhood, a new development off Carolina Beach Road just south of Silva Terra Drive.

Deputies blocked traffic on Carolina Beach Road between Silva Terra Drive and Antoinette Drive while fire crews responded to the leak, Brewer said. The roadway reopened just before 6 p.m.

Piedmont Natural Gas responded to fix the leak. Some homes in the area were evacuated, but most residents were put under a shelter in place status, Brewer said.
