Baseball

Topsail 10     Ashley 0    

Trader Flora and Sam Luchansky both homered to give Topsail an early lead as the Pirates extended its win streak to 14 straight on Tuesday night with a 10-0 shutout over Ashley.

Austin Baird threw a six-inning no-hitter to pick up the victory on the mound for Topsail, who improved to 8-1 atop the Mideastern Conference standings and 19-1 overall.

The Pirates jumped out to a 7-0 lead and chased Screaming Eagles starter Donovan Francis after just 1.1 innings pitched.

Flora hit a two-run shot to left in the first and finished 2-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBIs, while Luchansky smacked a solo shot in the second. Baird struck out three and walked one.

Ashley fell to 4-6 in league play and 9-9 overall.

South Brunswick 3     Laney 2    (eight innings)

Josh Larson pitched three innings of shutout relief to pick up the win as South Brunswick earned its first Mideastern Conference victory of the season 3-2 over Laney in eight innings on Tuesday.

Hunter Price delivered the walk off hit in the final frame.  The Cougars struck for two in the bottom of the first before the Bucs answered back to send the game into extra frames.

South Brunswick started Caleb Clemmons surrendered two runs in five innings of work.

 

North Brunswick 18    Southwest Onlsow 1

Shelton Perkins hit two home runs and Chris Graham drilled a three-run shot en route to an 18-1 over Southwest Onslow.

The Scorpions are 6-0 in conference and 11-5 overall.

 

Softball

Topsail 5    Ashley 1

Trailing by one, Topsail tied the game in the third and added two more in the fifth and sixth to earn a 5-1 comeback win over Ashley.

Victoria Elder struck out five in a complete game effort on the stripe for the Pirates. Hailey Grizzle, Hunter Bizzell and Keri White each had a run batted in.

North Brunswick 9     Southwest Onslow 2

Kasey Klutz went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs to lead North Brunswick in a 9-2 win over Southwest Onslow.

Preston Ellenburg struck out nine in seven innings of work and allowed just two runs on one hit with three walks. She also finished with two hits and two runs batted in, while Tasia Bolling went 2-for-4 at the plate.


Soccer

Hoggard 2      New Hanover 1

Hoggard ran its unbeaten streak to 15 straight games and remain in first place atop the Mideastern Conference following a 2-1 win over New Hanover at Legion Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Vikings improved to 8-0 in league play and 14-1-1 overall. The Wildcats dropped to 4-3 in conference and 9-5 on the year.

Jess Bennion put Hoggard in front just five minutes into the match when the sophomore sent a bender on frame off a corner kick and Sayres McKenna added a much needed insurance goal in the 68th minute before New Hanover broke up the shutout late in the second half.

Laney 5      South Brunswick 0

Five different Laney players found the back of the net as the Bucs picked up a 5-0 result over South Brunswick on Tuesday.

Sydney Young made seven stops in the shutout. Laney moved to 7-1 in conference and 12-1 overall. The Bucs remain one game back from Hoggard for first-place in league play.

Libby Moore notched the only goal in the 72nd minute off a corner kick from Katherine Drew Marapese as Cape Fear Academy blanked Fayetteville Academy 1-0 on Tuesday.

Delaney Mitchell made three saves in the shutout. The Hurricanes improved to 6-1 in conference and 9-3-1 overall.
