Ashley High to hold open house for marine academy program

Budding underwater explorers can get a glimpse of Ashley High School’s Marine Science Academy this week.

An informational open house for the 2015-16 school year is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at Ashley High, 555 Halyburton Memorial Parkway.

The Marine Science Academy is open to all rising juniors and seniors in New Hanover County who have a strong interest in marine sciences and are considering careers in the field.

Minimum requirements for acceptance include strong academic success in Honors Earth/Environmental Science, Honors Biology and Honors Chemistry. It is also recommended that students successfully complete Advance Placement (AP) Biology, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics and/or AP Chemistry.

Students may choose to attend the Marine Science Academy during the spring course selection process, but an application and essay must be submitted in order to be considered. Applications are due by Friday, May 8, and acceptance letters will be distributed on Friday, May 15.
