Ethel ‘Lynn’ R. Kay, 92, remembered as welcoming, a ‘pure ray of sunshine’

Ethel “Lynn” R. Kay died peacefully while in the care Lower Cape Fear Hospice on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at the age of 92.

Lynn is survived by her husband of 69 years, William Everette Kay; children, Barbara McIlveen, Kathy Rollins (Steve), Bill Kay (Lynn), Steve Kay and Sandy DiBenedetto (Steve); 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three loyal dogs, Shadow, Skipper and Cody.

Lynn was born Nov. 9, 1922, in Holly Hill, South Carolina, daughter of the late Louis Pickney Rast and Rhodie Foethel Rast. In 1945, she married her true love, Major William Kay, a WWII pilot in the U.S Army Air Corps. Her children remember her as being patient, caring, kind, welcoming and a pure ray of sunshine who taught them to follow their dreams, reach for the stars and look for the positive.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 18, 2015, at Andrews Valley Chapel with the Rev. Shawn Blackwelder officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Lynn’s life.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Lynn’s memory may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their “above and beyond” care and dedication during this difficult time.
