A 20-year-old Wilmington man died after jumping off the Snow’s Cut Bridge near Carolina Beach on Sunday.

Emergency crews responded to Snow’s Cut Park, 9420 River Road, for a report of a single-vehicle wreck just before 7:30 a.m. Sunday, according to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer.

When EMS and fire crews arrived, there was no driver at the scene of the burning wreck, which was beneath the bridge. A man-believed by police to be the driver–then appeared at the top of Snow’s Cut Bridge, yelled down to emergency personnel and jumped off the bridge, Brewer said.

The man was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he was reported in serious condition, Brewer said. Hospital officials notified the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office that the man died at about 6 p.m. Sunday.

According to N.C. State Highway Patrol Trooper M.A. Minshew, the driver was driving toward a sharp curve on River Road, but drove straight onto a hump in the road. The vehicle went airborne, hit several trees and then caught fire.

The vehicle was traveling at an “extremely” high rate of speed with estimates at about 90 mph, Minshew said.

“The car was totally destroyed,” he added.
