Drew Zabriskie, of Wilmington, died April 12, 2015, following a brief illness. He was 68.
Born and raised in Newburyport, Massachusetts, Drew was the son of the former Newburyport mayor and Essex County state representative, Albert H. and Louise Atkinson. He was preceded in death by siblings, Albert E. and Deborah Zabriskie.
Drew is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 38 years, Anne Murphy Zabriskie and their three children, Caitlin Saviano (Antonio), of Florida, Kerry Reed (Eric), of Colorado and Capt. Drew Zabriskie II (Laura), of Hawaii as well as Amanda Mathiesen (James), of Massachusetts, from a previous marriage. Grandchildren include Francesco Saviano and soon-to-be born “Baby Reed” in addition to a large and loving extended family.
Drew was a 1965 graduate of Newburyport High School and 1970 graduate of Bridgewater State College. He was awarded the degree of Juris Doctor (JD) from Suffolk University Law School in 1978. Drew retired after many years of work as chief probation officer in the Newburyport Court System.
Drew was a life member of the BPOE Lodge #909 and following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Albert C., he was also a past exalted ruler. Drew was a former trustee of the Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank and served on both the Newburyport Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Board. Drew was a member of the Cape Fear Men’s Club in Wilmington, and a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.
He was never happier than when spending time with his wife and family. He was so proud of his children and their personal and professional achievements, bragging about them to anyone who would listen. Drew often sought to help those in need by serving as a champion to the underdog. A lover of all animals, Drew was also a history buff and an avid collector of antique firearms.
Drew delighted in the beauties of nature and spent much time in the outdoors camping, hunting and boating. Husband, father, grandfather and friend, Drew will be profoundly missed by all whose lives he was fortunate enough to touch.
A funeral Mass and burial will be held in Newburyport, Massachusetts in early June. Details to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Healing4Heroes, Lower Cape Fear Hospice or a charity of one’s choice.
