Billy Philips, of Wilmington, died on Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. He was 73.

Born Feb. 10, 1942, in Wilmington, to Chefeek Philips Sr. and Mary House Philips, he attended New Hanover High School. Billy worked at Channel 3 during its inception. He also spent time working on the oil rigs in the North Sea before starting and operating a successful Wilmington-based business, Pool Specialist.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Chefeek Philips Sr. and Mary House Philips; brother, James Albert Philips; and niece, Janet Philips Johnson.

Surviving are his wife, Dot Philips; sons, David and Christian; daughter-in-law, Lindsay; granddaughter, Brandi; brothers, Bobby and C.M. Jr.; along with many nieces and nephews, his four-legged companions, Ziggy and Zoe and his granddogs, Caddi and Nali.

Billy was known as someone who could fix anything and who never backed down from a challenge.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2015, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Pretty in Pink Foundation in memory of Janet Philips Johnson or the Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
