Nelson Keith Fravel died unexpectedly on April 3, 2015, in Leland. He was 61.

Keith was born in Harrisonburg, Virginia on Dec. 27, 1953. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1972 to 1975. He requested to serve in Vietnam; however, being only 17 years old, he was assigned to a submarine tender off the coast of Rhoda, Spain. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Richmond, Virginia where he met and married his cherished wife of 38 years (“going on 39”), Yvonne Bowles Fravel.

He most recently resided in Carolina Beach and Leland. He loved people and chatting with anyone who had time to listen. He looked for opportunities to help his children, friends and many strangers, always quietly and usually without recognition.

In addition to his wife, Yvonne, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Wendy Robinson and husband, David, of Louisa, Virginia and Jonnie Garrette and husband, Michael of Leland; four grandchildren, Taylor and David Robinson and Amelia and Reid Garrette; three brothers, Bill Fravel and wife, Lynn, of Jupiter, Florida, Phil Fravel, of Southport and Allen Fravel and wife, Melissa, of Richmond, Virginia; his constant companion, Gizzy Fravel; and three grand-dogs, Logan, JoJo and Roxy.

A celebration of Keith’s life will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at St. James Parish, 25 S. 3rd St., Wilmington, NC 28401.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the following non-profit organizations: Susan G. Komen for the Cure; the American Heart Association; or the ASPCA.

Please leave online condolences for the family at Andrews Mortuary.
