Maj. Stephen Dorenda Jr., of Wilmington, left on his final mission on April 4, 2015, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. He was 78.

He was born Nov. 29, 1936, in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen Dorenda Sr. and Agnes Cecelia Gdovic Dorenda.

He was a graduate of the Naval Flight School in Pensacola, Florida and flew 333 missions as a fighter pilot in the Vietnam War. After his time in the Marines, he worked as a mining engineering consultant.

Major Dorenda is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy Johnson Dorenda; his children, Carolynn London, Lisa Scallion (Rich) and Lee Johnson Jr. (Sandy); and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Norma Kish (Bill) and his loving cousin, Gladys Bacco (Ray).

A celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 9, 2015, at Harbor United Methodist Church, 4853 Masonboro Loop Road, Wilmington, NC 28409. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. At a later date, he will be laid to rest at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401; Harbor United Methodist Church, 4853 Masonboro Loop Road, Wilmington, NC 28409; or Air Warrior Courage Foundation.
