Sterling Ross Johnson, of Wilmington, died peacefully at home on April 5, 2015, after seeing the sunrise Easter morning. He was 86.

Sterling, also known as “Dr. Diesel” and “Johnnie,” worked as a marine mechanic on Wrightsville Beach for many years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of St. Johns Lodge 1 and a lifelong member of Oleander United Methodist Church where he was a member of the choir.

Sterling is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Janice Reynolds Johnson; daughters, Ross Johnson Walls and husband, Brad, Paula Johnson and husband, Henry; Cheryl Johnson and Coley Johnson; daughter-in-law, Donna Christine Johnson; grandchildren, Kristin Jope (Lt. Cmdr. Adrian Jope, U.S. Navy), Allison P. Adams (Chris), Katie Walls and Lt. Cpl. Ryan Johnson, U.S. Marine Corps; and four great-grandchildren, Jack Henry, Sterling and Luke Jope and Preston Reynolds Adams.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 9, 2015, at Oleander United Methodist Church, 5810 Oleander Drive, Wilmington.
