The Wilmington Road Runners Club (WRRC) is once again offering college scholarships for two high school seniors in New Hanover, Pender and New Brunswick counties.

Scholarship applicants are selected based on performance as a cross-country or track and field athlete, extracurricular activities and demonstrated leadership. A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to one male and one female. Winners must commit to continuing their participation in the sport in college.

“We are thrilled to support young athletes who want to continue participating in track and field after their high school careers end,” said Lisa Broiser, WRRC President.

The 2014 winners were Justin Lehn from Coastal Christian High School and Kerry Leonard from Laney High School. Lehn is competing for the University of Missouri and Leonard is running for Appalachia State.

Last year Bill Malchano, WRRC Scholarship Selection Committee Chair, found selecting the winners particularly difficult. “It wasn’t easy picking just two winners from such a great bunch of applicants,” he said.

Anticipating another group of talented athletes applying this year, the task will not get any easier, the group said in a news release.

Coaches need to submit nominations by April 15. Details and an application for the WRRC scholarship program are available on the club’s website.
