UPDATE: 7 p.m. Monday
Residents in the northwest corner of Brunswick County were allowed to return to their homes at about 6 p.m. Monday, after fire crews evacuated several neighborhoods as they fought a large forest fire near Leland.
According to Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner, residents in the Barrington neighborhood and Heirloom Drive areas–off Mount Misery Road–were evacuated Monday afternoon. Residents in the Butler Road area were also evacuated.
North Brunswick High School was opened for evacuees, according to Emily Flax, spokeswoman for the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.
At this time, U.S. 74-76 and U.S. 17 in Brunswick County remain open for travel. In addition to several Brunswick County agencies, the N.C. Forestry Service responded to the fire.
