Southern Lee 7 Hoggard 2
Southern Lee plated three runs in the fourth inning on three hits to break a tie ballgame and Maxx Taylor drilled a three-run home run over the wall in left-center as the Cavaliers handed Hoggard a 7-2 setback in game two of the Ashley Spring Break Tournament on Thursday.
With the score level at one run apiece after three full frames, Connor Showalter worked a one-out walk and eventually came around to score on an RBI double by Marcos Collazo. Topher Grant came through with a two run-single in the next at-bat to make it 4-1 before the Vikings got one back in the fifth when Robert Wilkerson singled home Brad Pennington.
Pennington finished his day with a pair of doubles and one run scored. Grant had two hits and Jonathan Husk went 3-for-3 to pace the Cavaliers.
Ben Gaster earned the victory on the mound, allowing one run on three hits in four innings, while Josh Taylor surrendered one run in three innings of relief.
Trailing by three, Hoggard had an opportunity with bases loaded and one out in the sixth, but Taylor worked his way out of the jam with a popup to center and called strike three on a curve ball that crossed the inside corner.
In the bottom of the inning, Husk led off with a single and Ryan Holmes was issued a one-out walk. That set the stage for Maxx Taylor, who drilled a 3-0 pitch deep to left.
The Vikings left 10 runners on base in the game.
