Ashley broke open a scoreless ballgame with a three-run fourth inning and plated two more late in the game to earn a 5-0 shutout over Reidsville to close out day one of the spring break tournament on Tuesday night.
Freshman hurler Price King struck out seven and allowed no runs in five-plus innings of work to get the victory, scattering four hits.
Mooresville 7 Laney 6
With Laney trailing by two in the bottom of the seventh Troy Cruse dropped in a single to score one, but the game-tying run was thrown out at home plate to give Mooresville a 7-6 win in a dramatic finish to game three of the spring break tournament.
The Bucs went down 4-0 after two full innings of play when Gage Vass crossed the plate in the third to get within three, while Laney loaded the bases in the fourth when Jonathan Kuebler smacked a three-run double.
Caleb Klucking put the Blue Devils back in front on a solo shot that was answered in the bottom of the frame with a round tripper by Danny Mone to tie the game 5-all.
Mooresville scored two more in the top of the seventh to set up the play at the plate that ended the game.
Kuebler went 2-for-4 to lead Laney at the plate with a double and 3 RBIs. Griffin Stevens paced the Blue Devils lineup with a double and two runs batted in.
Mooresville faces New Hanover at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, while Laney takes on Southern Lee at 10:30 a.m.
Topsail 12 West Brunswick 2
Danny Wilson, Clark Cota and Trader Flora each hit home runs to lead Topsail in a 12-2 win and regular season sweep over West Brunswick on Tuesday night.
The Pirates carried a 3-0 lead into the top of the third when the Trojans got to within one before Topsail erupted for six runs in the fourth and Clark Cota delivered the knockout blow with a three run shot in the fifth to secure the result.
Wilson opened the game with a lead off blast to put Topsail on the board, while Flora and Sam Hall finished with two hits apiece. Flora closed with four runs batted in and Jake Madole added two doubles in the victory.
Hunter Ashburn paced the West Brunswick lineup with a 2-for-2 day at the plate, with a double, RBI and run scored.
The Pirates pounded 11 hits in the game and Wilson struck out five in four innings of work to earn the victory.
Topsail remains atop the Mideastern Conference standings with a 5-1 mark in league play and improved to 10-1 overall with their fifth straight win. The Pirates travel to the central part of the state later this week for the Hilltop Invitational against Orange High School on Thursday, April 2.
West Brunswick dropped to 3-3 in conference and 9-3 on the year.
