Samuel ‘Sam’ Tyler Noel, 87, hiked sections of Appalachian Trail over the years

Samuel “Sam” Tyler Noel, of Wilmington, was born Sept. 13, 1927, and died unexpectedly on March 28, 2015. He was 87.

Sam was preceded in death by his daughter, Robin Noel Britt. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances Flynn Noel; daughter, Nancy Noel May (Russ), of Wilmington; daughter, Tracy Noel Sullivan (Scott), of Olde Point; son-in-law, Bob Britt, of Chapel Hill; grandchildren, Robert Britt (Emily), Charles Samuel Britt (Megan), Tyler O’Neill Sullivan, Sarah Flynn Sullivan, Joshua Noel Sullivan; and sister Sarah Noel Richardson (Guy), of Richmond, Virginia.

Sam attended VPI for one year before joining the Merchant Marines during WWII and returned to graduate from Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. He had a lifelong career with J.J. Haines & Company.

Sam was a devoted family man and friend. For many years he and a group of friends hiked a different section of the Appalachian Trail. Sam was an avid sportsman, whether he was playing or watching.

A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at a later date.
