UNCW junior softball player Casey Rowland was named second-team All-CAA as the Colonial Athletic Association handed out its annual awards Tuesday at the league’s pre-tournament banquet.
Rowland was also recognized for her work in the classroom as she was named to the CAA’s All-Academic Team.
“Casey finished the season with some very good performances,” said UNCW Head Coach Kristy Norton. “She put up some great numbers against some very good hitting ball clubs. Hopefully her work continues through the off-season and she can lead this team towards the conference tournament next season.”
A native of Albany, N.Y., Rowland earned a spot on the second team at the pitcher/utility position after a 2014 campaign that saw her split time between the circle and the outfield. The left-handed hurler paced the UNCW pitching staff with a 3.01 earned run average in a team-best 181.2 innings pitched as she posted two shutouts and 13 complete games in 33 appearances.
Rowland, who established a new program-mark for strikeouts in a contest with 17 against Campbell on April 25, also fanned 179 batters during her junior season to claim the second spot on the program’s single-season strikeout list.
At the plate Rowland finished with 21 hits, including nine extra-base knocks, and recorded 12 RBIs. She was also proficient in the field, committing just one error in 73 total attempts for a team-best .986 fielding percentage.
In the classroom, Rowland has compiled a 3.37 cumulative GPA in Elementary Education. She was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2013 semester and also earned the Golden Seahawk and CAA Commissioner’s Award during 2012-13 season.
