UNCW will host the second annual Wilmington Color Me Rad 5K on Sept. 6 to help support scholarships for student-athletes on campus. Registration for the highly anticipated run opened April 9.
“The community’s participation last year was beyond what we had expected,” said Rob Aycock, executive director of the Seahawk Club. “These kinds of events are a critical source of support for our student-athletes. We are eager to surpass last year’s race participation in September, and for those unable to join us, we hope they’ll take a moment to click and offer support for our programs.”
Last October, Color Me Rad made its Wilmington debut and raised $23,650 for the Seahawk Club. Student-athletes who volunteered during last year’s fundraiser helped raise a portion of these funds. Color Me Rad made a $7,500 donation to the Seahawk Club for their efforts.
In the past two years, more than 1 million runners have participated in Color Me Rad events in more than 100 cities across North America. Whether walking or running, every 15-20 minutes participants are doused with “color bombs.” Of course, “UNCW teal” will be a featured color in the Sept. 6 event.
The mission of the Seahawk Club is to strengthen and develop the athletic programs at UNCW by raising funds to support athletic scholarships and the improvement of facilities. The Seahawk Club strives to provide scholarships for approximately 360 student-athletes each year. During the fall semester, UNCW athletic teams received 139 academic honors, averaged a 3.2 GPA and contributed more than 5,000 hours of community service.
Beginning April 9, community members can register for $35. The price will increase monthly in increments of $5 until September 6 or until it is at capacity. Registrants can receive an additional 10 percent off by using the promotion code “UNCW.”
The Color Me Rad 5K will take place throughout the UNCW campus on Sept. 6 starting at 9 a.m. with waves of 1,500 people taking off every 20 minutes. Participants of all ages are encouraged to run or walk through the colors.
