UNCW red-shirt freshman Gavin Stupienski’s pinch-hit single in the eighth inning gave UNCW the lead as the Seahawks topped VCU 4-2 Saturday at Brooks Field.
Senior Ryan LaGrange collected three hits on the day, drew a walk and scored twice, while Corey Dick added two base knocks, including a two-run shot to left in the first inning that tied the game at two-all. It was his second of the season and the 19th of his career.
Matt Batts struck out seven and scattered eight hits over seven innings with two earned runs as the Seahawks’ starter. Kelly Secrest (3-1) picked up the win, allowing just a double and a walk, while fanning three in two innings of work.
With the game knotted 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth, LaGrange and Luke Dunlap both worked walks to put runners on first and second with one out when Stupienski lined a two-strike single to center to score LaGrange. Dillon Bass added the insurance in the next at-bat when he drove in pinch runner Steven Linkous to make it 4-2.
The Seahawks and Rams will play a doubleheader on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
Seahawk’s Rowland ties program record with 12 strikeouts in win
Junior Casey Rowland matched her career-high with 12 strikeouts to lead UNCW past North Carolina Central 4-0 in collegiate softball action on Saturday at Boseman Field.
Rowland’s matched both personal and program single-game marks for strikeouts to highlight a solid effort in the circle for the Albany, N.Y., product as she allowed just four hits and one walk in seven innings of work to move her record to 5-3 on the season
Senior Casey Shue was 1-for-3 with three RBI to lead a UNCW lineup that finished with six base hits in the contest. With the Seahawks up 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Shue delivered a two-out, two-run single through the left side to close out the win. Sophomore Erin Brown was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The Lady Seahawks put a run on the board in each of the first two innings off an RBI single by freshman Nella Chamblee in the opening frame and a bases load walk to Shue in the second.
UNCW and North Carolina Central will complete their three-game series Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
