No. 1 Virginia, Kentucky, VMI baseball in town; UNCW softball adjusts weekend invite

The UNCW baseball teams opens the season with the annual Hughes Bros. Challenge Feb. 14-16, as VMI, Kentucky and No. 1 Virginia visits Brooks Field. The Cavaliers reached the Super Regionals last season and return the bulk of their players off that squad as the No. 1 preseason ranked team in the nation.

“If people in this area want to see some great college baseball, they have a tremendous opportunity to do so next weekend,” said UNCW Coach Mark Scalf. “We’ve got the number one ranked team in the nation in Virginia, Kentucky in the Top-25 and VMI is a very solids club picked to finish in the top half of their league.

“You really have an opportunity to see some great college baseball right out of the gate and we’re excited about it. We play three games in three days against three different teams and it’s one of the few times other than the NCAA regional that you get to do that.”

As of right now, Virginia will play Kentucky will open play with a 1:30 p.m. first pitch Friday, followed by UNCW’s home opener against VMI.

Saturday, Feb. 15

Noon   Virginia vs. VMI

10 a.m. Kentucky vs. VMI

2 p.m.   UNCW vs. Virginia

 

Softball makes scheduling change for invitational

Due to inclement weather, UNCW softball coach Kristy Norton announced a revised schedule for this weekend’s Seahawk Invitational at Boseman Field.

All three games scheduled for Friday have been cancelled. There will now be a total of eight contests played with four games on Saturday and four on Sunday.

The updated tournament schedule is listed below.

Saturday, Feb. 15

10 a.m. UMBC vs. UNCW

Noon   Norfolk State vs. UNCW

2 p.m Norfolk State vs. Liberty

4 p.m. UMBC vs. Liberty

 

Sunday, Feb. 16

10 a.m. UMBC vs. Norfolk State

Noon East Carolina vs. Norfolk State

2 p.m.   Liberty vs. UNCW

4 p.m.  UMBC vs. UNCW
