Citing continued treacherous road conditions and widespread power outages, officials with New Hanover and Brunswick county schools have canceled classes Thursday.
As of Wednesday afternoon, more than half of the 41 schools in New Hanover County were without power. And district leaders cited concerns that fallen limbs in the roadways would be hazardous for school buses.
Schools are closed to students and staff but some custodial employees could be called in for maintenance work.
In Brunswick County, officials made the call after closely monitoring conditions throughout the day and consulting with Brunswick County Emergency Management and local law enforcement officials.
“Interior conditions within the county continue to create treacherous road conditions coupled with wide-spread power outages,” spokesperson Jessica Swencki stated in a press release issued Wednesday afternoon.
Swencki said a decision has not yet been made on make-up dates for the closings Wednesday and Thursday.
“That information will be discussed and shared at a later date,” she noted.
New Hanover County Schools has set Saturday, Feb. 22, as one make-up date but has not announced one for Thursday.
