Brunswick, New Hanover schools closed Thursday; other weather-related closings

Update: 6:45 p.m.

Due to hazardous travel conditions, New Hanover County government offices will delay opening until noon Thursday.

Update: 5:30 p.m.

UNCW has cancelled classes Thursday, Jan. 30.

Randall Library will open at 10 a.m. and close at 4 p.m. Wagoner Dining Hall will open at 8 a.m. Thursday. The Student Recreation Center will open at 10 a.m. Thursday.

All three facilities will remain open as staffing and conditions allow; updates regarding closing times will be posted here. A website message will be posted no later than 5 p.m. on Thursday regarding classes and events on Friday.

The New Hanover County and Pender County courthouses will be closed Thursday.

Cape Fear Community College will be closed Thursday.

“All classes and events are cancelled,” CFCC Spokesman David Hardin said. “More updates to come as college officials continue to monitor the local roadways and weather forecast.”

All Brunswick County government offices will be closed Thursday. The Brunswick County courthouse will remain closed today.

Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc., will not be operating senior centers or nutrition sites Thursday due to the hazardous road conditions and other associated closings, announced BSRI President Jim Fish on Wednesday. While BSRI sent out additional meals on Monday in anticipation of closures on Tuesday and Wednesday, the unexpected Thursday closure could create an undue burden for some seniors, he added.

BSRI will make arrangements to deliver shelf-stable and frozen meals to seniors needing food assistance on an individual basis. Food deliveries can be coordinated with Belinda Stroops, Director of Nutrition Services for BSRI at 910-200-7266.

The Brunswick County courthouse will remain closed Thursday, Jan. 30.

The Lucero show originally scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ziggy’s By The Sea has been postponed. Updates will be available on Ziggy’s website.

Brunswick and New Hanover schools are closed to students and staff Thursday, Jan. 30.

Friends School of Wilmington and Charter Day School in Leland have also announced they will remain closed Thursday.

New Hanover County

All schools are closed Tuesday and Wednesday to staff and students. All after-school activities–sports and extra-curricular–are cancelled. Sporting events will be played the next day school is in session.

New Hanover government offices are closed Wednesday, including all county parks, Airlie Gardens and Cape Fear Museum. New Hanover courts are also closed Wednesday.

Wilmington Christian Academy is closed Tuesday and will update its website regarding Wednesday’s schedule.

Friends School of Wilmington will be closed for students and staff Tuesday and Wednesday.

Cape Fear Academy is closed Tuesday and will announce a decision regarding Wednesday’s schedule on its website.

The Hill School of Wilmington’s open house for prospective families, originally scheduled for Tuesday, has been rescheduled to 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the school, located at 3240 Burnt Mill Drive, Suite 9A.

City of Wilmington government offices will be closed Wednesday. Wrightsville Beach government offices will close by noon Tuesday, remain closed Wednesday, and reopen at 9 a.m. Thursday, weather pending.

All UNCW classes and events have been cancelled for Tuesday and Wednesday. Campus dining will open at 8 a.m. Wednesday, and the student recreation center and Randal Library will open at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority will be closed all day Wednesday. Essential water and wastewater operations will continue as normal. Customers are directed to call 332-6565 for emergencies only.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) said it planned to go on lockdown at noon Tuesday through 10 a.m. Thursday. During lockdown, no visitors will be permitted. NHRMC won’t accept respite or residential care patients during the storm. All of NHRMC’s health and diagnostic sites, urgent care sites and outpatient clinics will close at noon Tuesday. Its physician group practices will be closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning. “Patients should call their offices on Thursday to confirm rescheduled appointments,” said a release.

Residents with health questions or concerns may call the hospital’s VitaLine at any time. The number is (910) 815-5188.

Edlerhaus Adult Day programs will be closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNCW has cancelled all programs Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Cape Fear Community College will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 28, and Wednesday, Jan. 29. All classes and events are cancelled.

The Wilmington Family YMCA has cancelled all group classes Tuesday, and the facility will close at noon.

The Cape Fear Literacy Council will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Brunswick County 

All Brunswick County schools are closed for students and staff Tuesday, Jan. 28, and Wednesday, Jan. 29. Charter Day School has cancelled school Tuesday and Wednesday.

Brunswick County government offices and the county courthouse will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Brunswick Community College will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and Wednesday, Jan. 29, for all students, faculty, staff and administration.

Waste Industries will be monitoring weather conditions for Wednesday, Jan. 29. If there is any snow or ice accumulation, trash collections scheduled for Wednesday will be collected on Saturday, Feb. 1. If there is no snow or ice accumulation and roads are safe trash collections will run as normal on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

Caswell Beach Town Hall may close around noon Tuesday through Wednesday.

Leland Town Hall will be closed Tuesday, though essential personnel will be available as needed.

Area events and attractions 

Tuesday’s Fire on the Dock competition dining battle between chefs Antoine Murray of Cape Fear Country Club and Michael Barnes of Prime 1079 has been rescheduled for next Wednesday, Feb. 5.

The WilmingtonBiz After Hours event scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed until Monday, Feb. 3, due to the Winter Storm Warning. The event will take place on Feb. 3 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Country Club of Landfall.

The Cameron Art Museum, CAM Cafe and The Museum School will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday. The Children’s Museum of Wilmington will be closed Tuesday.

Due to imminent inclement weather, Cape Fear Museum will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 28. No decision has been made about operating hours on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

The food pantry at Bethany Presbyterian Church on Castle Hayne Road will be closed Jan. 29.

Pender, Duplin counties

Pender County schools are closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Pender County courts are closed Wednesday.

All classes and events scheduled at James Sprunt Community College in Kenansville will be cancelled due to expected weather on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and Wednesday, Jan. 29.
