A Wilmington man featured on “I (Almost) Got Away With It,” a true crime TV show on the Investigation Discovery channel, was arrested Monday.
Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Linda Rawley said 26-year-old Kylen Duane Padgett Jr. was arrested just after 1 a.m. Nov. 11.
A Wilmington police officer was patrolling the 5200 block of Market Street and noticed a man breaking into a coin machine. Padgett ran from the officer and was apprehended a few blocks away, Rawley said.
Padgett was charged with breaking into a coin machine, possession of burglary tools, resisting arrest and possession of a moped with an altered vehicle ID.
“You may recall Padgett was featured on the Discovery series, ‘I (Almost) Got Away With It,’” Rawley said. “At just 19 years old, Kylen Padgett’s crime spree in Wilmington and New Hanover County got him arrested. The TV series highlights that a jury acquitted Padgett of a 2007 attempted murder charge.
“A short while later he reverted back to his old ways by robbing wealthy homeowners. The crime spree launched a countywide manhunt,” Rawley said.
According to the N.C. Department of Corrections, Padgett has been convicted of 127 criminal charges, including 48 counts of breaking and entering and 46 counts of larceny. He was released from the Polk Correctional Institution in April.
Padgett is in the New Hanover County jail under a $10,000 secured bond.
