Colin Bonner recorded his first career hat trick with three goals in UNCW’s 4-2 victory over Northeastern last Wednesday. The sophomore forward twice gave the Seahawks one-goal leads with scores in the first half and then tacked on an insurance goal in the 78th minute as UNCW earned the No. 2 seed for the CAA Championship. Bonner raised his season goals total to six as he posted the first hat trick by a UNCW player since 2011.
William & Mary shut out Hofstra 1-0 in the quarterfinals on Saturday to set up a semifinal match between the Seahawks and Tribe in Philadelphia on Nov. 14. The Tribe is ranked No. 23 in the nation this week by Top Drawer Soccer and No. 28 by College Soccer News. Delaware will also plays top-seeded Drexel and the two winners meet in the CAA Finals, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 16.
UNCW was picked fifth by the league’s coaches in the preseason poll and it’ll be the first time the Seahawks enter the tournament as the two-seed. UNCW was the top-seed in both the 2008 and 2009 tournaments. UNCW’s 20 goals allowed this season is the lowest total since 2010, when it allowed just 13. The Seahawks have never beaten the Tribe in the CAA tournament, but the teams have not met since 2001. UNCW played to a 2-2 draw with William & Mary at home on Nov. 2.
